As most anglers will know fishing is very popular in France. Our guests will find a small amount of fishing tackle in the
Grand Longere
gite which they are welcome to use during their stay.
Any person wanting to go freshwater fishing in France must first get a fishing permit ( carte de pêche ) from the local AAPPMA ( Associations Agrées de Pêche et de Protection du Milieu Aquatique ) affiliated fishing association. The website of the local fishing association for Finistere (in French) can be found here .
Permits are often sold in tabacs. The best local place we have found to buy a fishing permit is the "Peinture" shop in the square at Huelgoat . You can also purchase them online here: www.cartedepeche.fr

River and canal fishing in Finistere, Brittany

Starting from mid to late April the river
Aulne
comes alive with prolific runs of Allis shad. They migrate up river with the Atlantic salmon.
Allis shad are best caught on the fly and can reach up to 4lbs! They make for superb game fishing and are much neglected. Sea trout can also be found in the Aulne.

The Canal de Nantes à Brest , which is the canalized river Aulne, is around a 15 minute drive from the gites.

River Ellez, Finistere, Brittany

You will find the river Ellez at the end of the road that passes Ty Hir. It is an easy downhill walk from the property. Here we find traditional brown trout fishing on the fly. A lovely shallow fast flowing stream.
Most of the land surrounding the Ellez is privately owned. Please ensure that you seek permission for access from the landowner.
Another lovely local river is the near Carhaix which is only a short drive from our holiday cottage.

Lake and reservoir fishing in Finistere, Brittany
St Michel Reservoir. 15 mins
The St Michel reservoir or
is Finistère's premiere fishing reservoir at over 450 hectares. The main species of interest are pike, perch, brown and rainbow trout. They can be fished for on both the traditional lure (spinning) or the fly.
The pike fishing season normally runs from May to December and the trout season from April to September but this does vary from season to season.
The lake in Huelgoat , only 15 minutes away, is also a popular fishing spot. Here you will find carp, pike, perch, roach, and tench.
